Small Hands, Big Change: The Rise of Chino Hills' Young Changemakers

Since late last year, under the visionary leadership of Catherine Zhou, we proudly launched the Chino Hills branch of One World Anchor, a youth-driven initiative focused on empowering our communities, and her group has rapidly grown from just 9 to over 40 members. The goal was clear: to help people and positively impact the environment around us. However, due to legal and safety restrictions based on age, many activities we initially hoped to engage in were limited. Yet, this obstacle only fueled the determination of our young members, who refused to let their youth stand in the way of making meaningful contributions.

The following were weeks of brainstorming sessions, where a core group of passionate kids gathered to toss ideas, sketch plans on whiteboards, and discuss what they could realistically achieve despite the constraints. Through their relentless creativity and enthusiasm, they devised a community-driven project: to clean up and beautify local parks and neighborhoods.

Each weekend, regardless of weather conditions, these children put on their gloves, grabbed trash bags, and set out to make their community a cleaner and more inviting place. From picking up litter and wiping down picnic tables to sweeping playgrounds and removing graffiti, these young volunteers showed extraordinary commitment. They didn’t just limit their efforts to public spaces either—many of them extended their work to their own neighborhoods, leading by example and inspiring others to take pride in their surroundings.

Their efforts began to catch the attention of the community. Parents, neighbors, and local residents noticed the transformation. Parks that were once overlooked or considered eyesores were now vibrant and welcoming spaces where families could gather. The once-cluttered picnic areas and playgrounds sparkled, making them more inviting for visitors. Not only did the physical environment improve, but the morale of the community was uplifted as well. The sense of pride and unity within the neighborhoods grew stronger, as people began to see what a group of determined youth could accomplish.

Through their unwavering dedication and hard work over the past year, these young changemakers have not only cleaned up their surroundings but have also set an example of leadership and community spirit. Their efforts have shown that even the smallest hands can create significant change when guided by passion and a collective vision. What started as a simple weekend project, has evolved into a movement, inspiring others in the community—young and old alike—to get involved in preserving the beauty of their neighborhoods.

Looking forward, the Chino Hills branch of One World Anchor aims to expand this initiative, with plans to collaborate with local environmental groups, engage with city officials, and possibly implement sustainable practices, such as recycling programs or community gardens. These ambitious kids are eager to push the boundaries of what they can achieve, reminding us of all that age is not a barrier to creating lasting, positive change.
